Presentation AI in higher education writing instruction: Towards the creation of supporting materials more

This presentation reports on the results of the transnational European project “AI tools for writing: Integration of advanced technology in academic writing within university curricula and student support structures (AI Write)” co-funded by the Erasmus+ programme. The project aims to promote the effective implementation of best practices and ethical use of AI tools in academic writing. First, a literature and tools review was conducted to inventory tools currently used for (academic) writing support in higher education (HE) that rely on advanced language technologies, such as generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI). Second, a 2024 international survey among practitioners (n=218) investigated needs, current practices, and attitudes towards the use of AI-based technologies in English (L1 and L2) writing instructional practices. The insights gained from these preparatory steps guided us in the development of open educational resources to meet the needs of teachers, tutors, and students in HE. The 25 OERs developed cover a broad range of topics, including an AI-tools-selection framework for making informed decisions about the integration of AI-based tools, several ready-to-use lesson plans, and interactive exercises (e.g., on prompting).
